For new entrepreneurs

The first stop for anyone thinking of starting a new business. SBV provides information on many topics related to business, including business structure, start-up checklists, marketing and accounting. SBV will answer a great deal of the general questions you might have about starting a business.


Business.gov is similar to Small Business Victoria, but provides general information for the whole of Australia. This resource is important if you are planning on operating on a national level.

Australia Taxation Office

Information on all money-related matters, such as how to apply for an Australian Business Number (ABN), managing cash flow and invoices, and GST. The ATO website is full of useful information for every small business owner.

IP Australia

Visit this sit for information regarding intellectual property registers and categories of intellectual property.

Consumer Affairs Victoria

Consumer Affairs Victoria provides information relevant to businesses such as fair trading laws, licensing and registration, and resources for a ‘Better Business’.

Safe Work Australia

Safe Work Australia hosts information regarding Occupational Health and Safety laws and regulations, and the small business section links to state-specific websites for information relevant to the state(s) you will be working in.

Fair Work Australia

Learn the basics of the Fair Work workplace relations, including minimum employment conditions, record-keeping, pay slips, unfair dismissal laws and other responsibilities. This is tailored for the small business owner and employee.

Looking for a business grant from the government? Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to find government support, funding or loans for your business. Search this webpage for key topics such as business planning, R&D, innovation or marketing.

Australian Tax Obligations for Crowdfunding Income

If you're involved in crowdfunding – regardless of your role – you need to be aware of the tax consequences. These vary depending on the nature of the arrangement, your role in it and your circumstances. It is important to determine whether the money you receive through crowdfunding is income and whether you need to consider GST. If it is income, you will need to include it in your tax return and there may be deductions you can claim.
