Hosting and Domains Explained: The Plumbing Behind Every Website

About this webinar

This session is open to VIC / SA / TAS businesses in the Digital Solutions program. Not registered yet? Takes 2 minutes here.

"Domain", "hosting", "DNS" — these words get thrown around whenever websites come up, and they're rarely explained. That makes it hard to know what you actually need, what you're being charged for, and whether you're getting a fair deal.

This webinar demystifies the plumbing behind every website. Using plain language and simple comparisons, you'll finally understand what a domain name is, what hosting does, and how the two fit together. You'll also learn how to stay in control of your own domain, which matters more than most people realise, and how to avoid the traps that catch small businesses out.

‍

What you'll learn

• What a domain name is, and how it's different from a website and from hosting
• What web hosting actually does, in plain terms
• How a domain, DNS and hosting fit together to make a site appear when someone types your address
• What you're typically paying for, and how renewals and auto-billing work
• How to keep control of your own domain, and why that matters if you ever change providers

What you'll leave with

• A plain-English mental model of how domains and hosting work
• A short checklist of what to keep a record of (and who should own it) for your own domain
• Enough understanding to ask providers the right questions and avoid common traps

Who it's for

This session is for small business owners who pay for a domain or hosting but have never really understood what they're getting, and no technical background is needed.
