Region covered

MIC delivers Small Business Coaching for Self-Employment Assistance participants located in the Inner Metropolitan Melbourne Employment Region, which includes:

- Melbourne CBD and inner suburbs

- Alphington, Kew, and Doncaster through to Box Hill and Blackburn

- St Kilda, Elsternwick, and Caulfield down to Brighton, Moorabbin, and Cheltenham

- Extending south to Sandringham, Parkdale, and Patterson Lakes

If you’re located outside this region, you can find your nearest provider via the Workforce Australia provider directory.

How it works

1. Apply now. A short online application (about 5 minutes) about you and your idea.

2. Eligibility checks. We and Business Foundations confirm you meet the program criteria.

3. Hear back. If you're successful in being selected, we'll send your offer and a short checklist by Thursday 3 December.

Applications close: Sunday 29 November. There are 20 spots in the cohort.

Is it really free?

Yes. The workshop is fully funded by the Australian Government through Self-Employment Assistance, and delivered by Melbourne Innovation Centre in partnership with Business Foundations. There’s nothing to pay.

Do I need a business, a finished idea or business experience?

No. Most people start with a rough idea, and some with just a hunch. Day one is about testing it with real people, so you’ll quickly find out what to keep, change or drop. If you’ve already started a small business with up to four staff, you can apply too.

What will I have by the end of the five days?

You’ll leave with a business plan for your idea. You’ll also have an ideal customer profile, a clear value proposition, a brand kit and brand voice, your first landing page, and the start of your social media and marketing presence. Along the way, you’ll learn the basics of financial planning, cash flow and planning for profit.

Can I apply if I’m studying?

Not while you’re enrolled in study, including during semester breaks. If you’re finishing soon, keep an eye out for future workshops.

When and where is it?

Monday 14 to Friday 18 December 2026, 10am to 3pm, in person in Cremorne. Each day builds on the last, so you’ll need to come to all five. Can’t make it? Apply anyway and choose “No” on the dates question, and we’ll tell you about the next one.

I’m with Workforce Australia. Does this count?

Yes, the workshop counts towards [20 or 25] points in Workforce Australia’s Points Based Activation System (PBAS). You don’t need to be on a Centrelink payment to apply. If you’re with a provider, let them know you’re applying.

What happens after the workshop?

If you decide to move ahead and you’re eligible, you can move into 12 months of free one-on-one Small Business Coaching with Melbourne Innovation Centre.
